New trip that I propose today….
More exactly in the North of the country, in the area of the Beautiful town of Oporto. I will speak to you about a small town, which name is Vila do Conde.
¤ Between beach, river and eucalyptus forest …
* Vila do conde is ideally located at the end of the river " Rio Ave" , between Ground of green odorous forests, and Sea with beautiful white sand beaches and apparent rocks.
* To join the town of Oporto, to approximately 20 km, it’s easy by car passing by the motorway IC1 or by bus or now in the subway! The underground line serves also the airport, thus offering all the conveniences necessary. Vila do Conde is well served and easily accessible.
* To 3 km in the North of the city, you will be able to visit Povoa de Varzim, another small town, very touristic, equipped with splendid beaches.
¤ History and Patrimony…
* But first of all, Vila do Conde, is a great town of charm and streets picturesque, an atmosphere impressed with history and tradition.
* While arriving, you can notice just one thing: the monumental Convent of Santa Clara which literally dominates the city and the valley of the "Rio Ave". Founded in 1318, the convent was restored and increased at the 18th century. The interior is quite as impressive and in particular its ceilings magnificently worked. In addition to its remarkable architecture and its intimidating position, another important characteristic of the convent is the aqueduct which supplied formerly out of water. Taking its source in the mountains with 5 kms of the city, this aqueduct, formed of 999 arcs, is the 2nd larger in Portugal.
* While you’re walking in the historical centre, with the liking of the streets and alleys, you will find some other treasures: Gothic architecture and of style manuélin.
* To quote you some remarkable monuments, you have: the Museum of Religious art, the hall of the Town hall, the Center of Memory and Museum, the church of S.Francisco, the Public library… and well a lot of others still!
* But what I like more, are the frontages of the houses, with their architecture, refined but also their mosaics. Those compete of colors, of twisted reasons and originality.
¤ A city of Traditions…
* If you are in the north of the country in July or August, you have to take a look with the National Fair of the Craft industry. Do not miss the occasion to visit the “Museu das Rendas" and learn more about the history of the embroideries in the north of the country.
* With regard to the culinary specialties, do not forget to taste with “Doces de Convento Santa Clara" …. Delicious small cakes " conventuels" with savors as original as good such as: limão (lemon-yellow), feijão (bean), chila (watermelon), with the cream, almonds, cinnamon, etc…. Hummm!
¤ Life of every day….
* With 20.000 hbts, Vila do Conde has all the conveniences necessary: trade, markets, fairs, banks, hospital and private clinics, pharmacy… The town has a complete grid system: bus, taxis, subway.
* Many events are organized throughout the year by associations, the house of Youth, the Municipality...
* As regards of the lodging, forget the hotels and prefer the “Residential”, which offers to you simpler rooms but at a completely cheap price, in the order of 20 to 25 Euros breakfast included. Cleanliness is correct, the reception is pleasant because more “human”!
* The reception will be very simple, the inhabitants know everyone in the City and they can be pleasant and sometimes cordial.
* Here thus a very fast overview of Vila do Conde, picturesque city which will be able to charm you.
